I feel like this should accompany an ocean documentary like Blue Planet, the authoritative yet calming chords of David Attenborough washing over you as you gaze upon footage of a sea anemone being gently blown about by the current.

I never want to hear the original. I simply want to sink into the sound as it washes over me.

Here are some photos from a recent shoot we did with the beautiful Kayleigh from Ali McD using the new Lonely Hearts Lingerie. In between shots we talked about everything from her inclination towards Marilyn Manson's music to exams and sushi. Signed to some big agencies overseas, this wee miss is going to be big. I can feel it in my waters.

I'm a self confessed shocking shoe shopper. I'll happily invest in a beautiful dress, but when it comes to shoes I always chicken out.

No more, I say, no more! I'm on the hunt for something other than faded black chucks to wear during the upcoming winter months. I never said anything about practicality though . . .

These Rachel Comey clogs are just what I've been searching for. Teamed with a pair of grey ankle socks, knee highs, or opaques and I'd be as happy as a harlot from Holland.

Madewell Wedges

Dieppa Restrepo would be welcome in my wardrobe any day. Nothing beats the shine of a new pair of patent shoes. (They also have a cute video of shoes shuffle dancing around on a wooden floor, reminiscent of a school dance)

After watching the music video for Janelle Monae's 'Tightrope', I'm pretty much sold on hunting down a pair of these.

This photo shoot is from a number of years ago, 2005 Vogue China in fact, but I care not. It encompasses two of my favourite things, ballet and Sasha Pivovarova. She's stunningly gorgeous and somewhat of a twin to my one of my other favourite models, Gemma Ward (who seems to have forayed into acting).

I love the modern take on ancient traditional Chinese make up with the chalky white skin and subtle strokes of colour. Few models can make pantyhose, pseudo swimming caps look this amazing as well.

This gorgeous girl goes by the name of Imogen Watt. Signed to Red 11 only two months ago, she's the hotter than a hot knife through butter having featured in numerous editorials, photo shoots and looks books for the likes of Twenty Seven names, Sophie Burrowes, Karen Walker, and Moochi (to name but a few).

Rapunzel Rapunzel you are a babe.

I first saw a photo of Imogen when I was scouting for a model for an upcoming photo shoot. I immediately thought of one of my favourite girls (and the girl I wanted to use) at Ali Mc D, Olivia Haye. The two seem almost separated at birth in how alike they look.

I featured pictures of her a couple of months ago (here and here) in my extras coverage of Dunedin Fashion week. With such big blue eyes and long blonde hair, Olivia has a huge amount of potential which as of yet hasn't been utilised. She is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The gaggle of glorious girls amidst their youth in the twenty seven names shoot is almost haunting, like the children of the corn. I love, however, how the main face of the collection has an expression of being slightly sullen and bored rather than overly innocent.

So how exactly is related to cats you ask? It relates perrrrfectly. My new favourite fashion (and feline) blog fashion loaf featured these exclusive images from the recent twenty seven cats photo shoot.

Based around the high life of Zumi Reely, feline model and quote "Auckland's reigning fashion cat extraordinaire", fashion loaf is a must for anyone who cares anything about anything worth knowing. A fabulously facetious fashion blog, fashion loaf is one I'll be keeping tabs on for future photo shoots inspiration.

Don't even get me started on how much I love twenty seven names . . tumble, tuck and roll and there we go I just did. Flag the fact that these girls are also from Dunedin (holla), the clothes are just stunningly gorgeous. Simple, beautiful silhouettes, twenty seven names have mastered the art of dressing girls and ladies alike.

After two days of rain I've resigned myself to the fact that summer is finally over. Less daylight, horizontal rain, damp chucks after walking across the football field.

Winter, however, means mulled wine in small bars, electric blankets left on three all night, flannelet everything, slow cooker casseroles and sitting in front of the fire at my parents eating apple crumble and ice cream.

Attire wise, winter is a damn good excuse to don one's opaque tights every day (70 denier just doesn't work on a sunny day), chunky scarfs all up in your face, cold ears kept warm by beanies crocheted by your mum, and my absolute favourite, MITTENS.

I wish that all of these were mine,

as then I'd be looking mighty fine.

Cats are the funniest animal on this planet.

How could you be sad, shitty, upset, down, bored, lonely or tetchy looking at Senor Fat cat here? I certainly couldn't.

I talk to my cat when I see him. I often get caught by the neighbours launching into a full blown impression of him. In most instances it's as he stands beside me while I try to unlock the kitchen door, edging into my legs trying to get in first, thinking he has me fooled with his little show of love before he zip zap zooms in as soon as the lock clicks. My impression consists of one continuous long droning sound; it starts out low and undulates, weaving and winding in and out of various off pitch, nail on chalkboard octaves before petering off into a faint purr in the distance. I've got it down to a fine art if I do say so myself. No behind the hedge mutterings or peering glances through doily curtains is going to curb my enthusiasm.

Thundercub, who I wrote about last month here, enjoyed a wee success recently. Their song "Sex on Jupiter" was chosen to be used as the intro music for the 2010 iD Dunedin fashion show. Yeah boys!

Tonight they'll be playing at a house party in support of Jeffrey Lewis. Nothing like a good old house party. Cask wine, couples feeling each other up in dark corners, a drunk chubby guy throwing up in the garden. To be young, amorous and pissed.

As Suzy P's telling us, if you're interested in Thundercub, check out the video below from Off the Cuff. The project of a talented young man by the name of Daniel Alexander, it's a great mix of interview and performance footage; the tangents the boys go are hilarious, especially DJ's Banana, peanut butter and golden syrup sandwich in relation to the process of making music.

The Biff Merchants were also involved in the project and are definitely worth checking out. Fingers crossed Daniel's looking into continuing the project with other Dunedin/New Zealand bands xx

So far this week has been crazy busy. In between blogging for Runway Passport, modelling in the 'Back to the Future' show run by the Op Shop on Carroll Crew (ie Presbyterian support), interviewing some of the local and international designers for articles, helping out with preparations for the iD fashion show and doing my normal job, there's few precious moments to just sit down and enjoy the simple things, like Home and Away (yes, I love to hate to love it). Music Hype hosted a competition to remix The Mint Chicks 'Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!'. A couple of new comers from Poland won the competition, however, I feel like its something I've heard a hundred times over; the same relaxed synth beat, the kind of thing you space out to when your standing in a bar having had a little too much of everything, your feet on auto pilot, your brain in some other realm, it just doesn't stir anything in me.

Scratch 22's remix is one of the only ones not to go down a electro/trance/d'n'b road, perhaps that's why I like it. Checkit owwwt.

The spice of life

At a girly winey cheesy night I noticed my friends gorgeous spice rack.

mmm winey-cheesy-dip-things.

Each spice has its own wee personality. There seem to be three mischievous boys and three solemn girls. I love how naughty the salt looks as if to say "Yeeeh, that's right. I might just give you high cholesterol cheffo!" It makes me wonder how some of the other spices might be personified from your standard oregano and thyme to your more ethnic Chinese five spice and Morrocan seasoning, even the dirty old chicken salt.

Any takers on what the others on this spice rack would say or what other spices would look like?

All my friends have magical powers

Harley Jones is one talented (and lovely) man. He's just recently had an exhibition at Gallery Gallery in Dunedin entitled "All my friends have magical powers". Showcased were four large three sixty degree, enclosure type pieces and several mixed media drawings. Each walk in piece played around with the degree of envelopment, range of vision, and freedom of movement, allowing one to walk through them and be part of the installation.

This is some of Harley's more experimental exhibited work, however, it did draw draw upon some of his characteristic motifs (ie. the feathers) and was a continuation of his sketchy crafted style. What I was enamoured of for the most part was the use of gallery space and his drawings in particular. Harley's just one of those kids who's always been able to draw; he knows knows how to manipulate convention, yet there's a method to the madness. He's definitely got a knack for the interaction of colour and simplicity; correlative contradiction.

He also happens to have done a portrait of one beautiful young lady I know.

Health is coming to Dunedin! They're playing at the University of Otago Union Hall on the 21st of February, supported by brains and TFF.

The recently uploaded this awesome home made video for their Australasian tour entitled "AUSTRALIA :: NEW ZEALAND :: HEALTH IS NOT AFRAID OF YOU"

I love home made clips. My friends and I mucked around with infomercials for knife sets and exercise machines; how we ever made it stretch out for fourty five minutes I'll never know. We did learn from the best having watched years Suzanne Paul and that Mick Hastie guy who used to do the Tefal adds and now works his magic for the Magic Bullet.

(Massive Geek tangent warning) Health's use of samurai type swords reminded me of the mammoth task myself and two friends nobly broached of recreating the entire 'Lord of the Rings' epic one term holiday. From Anna's room (and her parents linen cupboard, much to their horror I'm sure) we created 'Tunics to go go', churning out tunic after tunic, cloaks, fake cotton wool beards, tinfoil swords and even hairy hobbit feet. We were so pro we had the soundtrack on discman (fifteen second antishock and all), the earbuds of which we would put up to our handy cam's tiny microphone to truly set the scene.

nb. I'd love to see the day where people start wearing discman's on chains as necklaces. I can just hear the one ups now...

Today my friends are from Thundercub. When trying to describe their music to others a series of musical adjectives get thrown into the fray willy nilly such as "progressive rock", "metal inspired drum and base", "electronica rocka". I'm going to go with electronica rocka because I made that up just then and it captures a whiff of what Thundercub embodies.

In fact that whiff might have just floated down the street from their band rooms, say about thirty four or thirty five metres. It's gotten aromically entangled with the indie kid at 15a's poppy and trancy So So Modern rhythms and the slightly disorientating time signature changes of the Mars Volta from flat 6; as you casually stroll along Smellytune Drive you'd begin to gather the unique aroma that is Thundercub.

The number of pedals guitarist Lee uses (and created himself no less) deserves a mention. He literally has a suitcase of them at his disposal, many of which alter and transform the sounds he produces to defy one's expectation of what an electric guitar can or should sound like. They'll be supporting the Mint Chicks in Dunedin at the Otago University Orientation, March 3rd. Go along and get those aural and olfactory senses a tingling.

It's somewhat of a pick'n'mix of rockers consisting of Jack White of obvious musical projects as The White Stripes and the Raconteurs, Alison Mosshart from the Kills (who are playing on Wednesday in Wellington, oh how I wish I was going), Jack Lawrence, the bassist from the Raconteurs, and Dean Fertitta, the Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist.

Alison's gritty, swaying vocals, the off kilter drum beat, and the droning guitar riffs make it a great listen for a day when you want all is to be submerged in gritty goodness.

On the surface it seems to be sweet and innocent but when you really listen to the lyrics its far more interesting than I could ever had realised. It reminds me a little of the way Jenny Lewis works within Rilo Kiley. I also quite like the photo of her on the most recent issue of Pulp.

It makes me want to do three things:

1. Thief back my 30 strong nail polish collection I gifted to a young friend during my later teen years during a spontaneous spring clean and reinvention of my self. This just reinforces the necessity of my hoarding ways in that I really do use things years later. Just like the emergency wrapping paper collection will come in handy one of these birthdays . . .

2. Get a blunt fringe again and get my GHD on.

3. Arm my wrists in a similar magpie obsessive manner.

The benefit of Sprouts

Love thee long time I do the Sprout bags. These things are not only eco friendly, being made of organic cotton grown and sewn in India, they are terribly stylish and have the cutest designs from homegrown New Zealand designers. I went to the seconds sale a few years ago and managed to buy them out of a few of their designs as they make the best presents.

My beautiful Felicity reminded me of their existence today when she walked in with this one.

I'm also in love with these two.
